To investigate the causes of Taegu`s stagnating economy we perform the regional growth rate differential analysis for the manufacturing industry in 13 metropoles and provinces of Korea including Taegu during the 1985-94 period. It is revealed that the recent contribution of weight part to Taegu`s growth is rapidly getting smaller and the rate part has shown a negative effect since 1990, implying that the efficiency of the production in Taegu is relatively inferior to other regions. Empirical estimation of the effects of relative price inefficiency in Taegu`s manufacturing industry during 1991-93 period indicates that, on average, the cost of production is increased by 46 percent, and the demand for capital and energy are increased by 351 and 25 percent, respectively. At the samee time the demand for labor is decreased by 37 perecent. Compared with the estimated overall average effects of relative price inefficiency in the Korean manufacturing industry the increase in production cost in Taegu is 10 percent higher and, in particular, the increase in the demand for capital is more than double.
