The purpose of this paper is to study Robert Southey’s several poems concerning slavery and slave trade in English Romantic era. This investigation aims at examining how the problem of slavery contributed to the making of Southey’s poetic works. Southey was an abolitionist in a way or another, and basically against the slavery system because it destroys the humanity of African black people. He showed directly abhorrence of the slave trade in his poems such as “Poems Concerning the Slave Trade”, “To the Genius, Africa” and “The Sailor Who had Served in the Slave Trade.” The first two poems deal with the subject of ‘vengeance’ and ‘violence’ for the enslaved black people’s liberation whereas the last one treats mainly the theme of ‘repentance’, ‘forgiveness of sin’ and ‘the possibility of salvation’. Even though his poetic language is awkward and declamatory, the poet strongly vigorously opposes slavery and slave-trade on a strong conviction.
