The purpose of this study is to analyze the Aesthetics of men"s costume in the Gothic period. Every society has developed the ideal beauty of appearance, and the ideal beauty includes both the human body and the costumes. Costume reflect the dominant aesthetic value in an age. The aesthetic characteristics of men"s costume in the age of Gothic was analyzed in terms of four categories: the male beauty, sublime beauty, sensual beauty, and artistic beauty. First, for the male beauty, the men in the age of Gothic enlarged their chests and shoulders by inserting a pad in them in order to express their masculine beauty of human body. Second, for the sublime beauty, men"s costume was exaggerated by voluminous houppelande and shoes with pointed toes. Third, for the sensual beauty, erotic emphases were made by wearing the tight chausses which exhibited the line and muscle of leg. Lastly, for the artistic beauty in the age of the Gothic, men"s costume was used heraldry design and was decorated with fancy fur trimmings in houppelande. Also, Artistic beauty was displayed various parti-colored chausses.
