The process meaning and the resultative meaning of phrasal verbs are in a close relationship. Depending on how we view them, they can be understood based on either contiguity or similarity. Thus, this paper claims that phrasal verb constructions can be analyzed either as a metonymic construction rooted in contiguity or as a metaphoric construction created by similarity. Since metonymy is claimed to operate only in one domain, this paper claims that the Continuous Phrasal Verb Construction is metonymic. Yet, based on the fact that metaphor is composed of two separate domains, this paper analyzes the Discontinuous Phrasal Verb Construction as a metaphoric one. This difference can explain why the two different constructions of phrasal verbs reveal different degrees of the resultative meaning.
