This study employs an interpretive approach to understanding the impact of the Hallyu Effect on Laotian long-stay tourists. The study explores the long-stay tourists’ preconceptions toward South Korea versus their experiences while staying in the country. This study reviews previous research on the Korean Wave, destination image theory and long-stay tourism to find out how Hallyu related media promotes Korean culture and its traditional features at the expense of non-Korean real life long-stay travel experiences in Korea. A purposive sample of 25 Laotian participants engaged in semi-structured interviews conducted in their native language. Findings indicate that Hallyu celebrity has an impact on Laotian travelers’ decision to visit Korea as academic sojourners to study the Korean language, to visit Hallyu-related attractions and to consume Hallyu-related products. Lao long-stay tourists’ perceptions of Korea are favorable in terms of the country, its culture, and tourism. They also had good experiences in Korea building new friendships, receiving help from advisors and visiting attractions. But findings also indicate that Laotian long-stay tourists’ experiences while traveling in Korea are different and more adverse than their Hallyu-influenced preconceptions. This suggests that while the Hallyu destination image is effective, it also partially romanticizes the Korean cultural experience, obscuring the potential intercultural problems facing the Laotian long-stay tourism market.
