This study investigates diachronic developments of English concessive prepositions such as despite, in spite of, and notwithstanding. More significantly, this study examines the role of language contact in language change and the relationship between language contact and grammaticalization. The findings of this study demonstrate that language contact and grammaticalization are not mutually exclusive but can go together. This study also shows that in contrast to the traditional notion that grammaticalization is an internal process and reanalysis is the most important mechanism for grammaticalization, language contact and analogy are significant motivating factors in forming a grammatical category. This study also explores the distributional characteristics of the three prepositions based on British National Corpus (BNC) and Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). Genre-specific uses of the concessive prepositions are also discussed in terms of ‘specialization (Breal 1991)’, which does not entail the elimination of the other concessive prepositions, although one becomes the pre-eminent exponent, but leads to a layering of the three prepositions which is manifested as textual preferences.
