Drug abuse has increased markedly in Korea in the past decade, expecially among adolescents. Now, adolescents` drug abuse has become a serious national problem Korea, and the nation must deal with this problem effectively as soon as possible. Many constructive debate of this issue has been continued to explain and predict causes of adolescent drug abuse. Many studies indicate that the most important motive for durg abuse among adolescents is seeking pleasure or "getting high." However, few research has suggested psychological reasons behind the pleasure seeking behavior through drugs among this population. Therefore, this study attempted to answer why Korean adolescents seek pleasure through drugs. Literature review shows that boredom is one of the reasons. That is, drug abuse is an alternative form of activities to seek pleasure for the bored adolescents who do not find intrinsic satisfaction in school and family where the emphasis is placed on the extrinsic mechanisms of grades and heavy school work. However, this study criticized that not all bored adolescents take drugs when they are bored. Studies show that boredom leads people to participate in leisure, and leisure allows them to get away from boredom. Some may seek leisure, while others pursue drugs. Thus, this study maintained that drug taking is an alternative form of leisure activity for bored adolescents who do not find their leisure intrinsically satisfying. Bored adolescents may seek leisure first. When they find the leisure experience is not satisfying, then they search for other form of activities such as drugs. Therefore, this study suggested that leisure boredom seem to have stronger explanatory power to predict adolescent drug abuses. What are the factors that cause leisure as boredom? Current study indicate that at least six factors are associated with leisure boredom: 1) lack of leisure awareness, 2) lack of leisure ethic, 3) high work ethic, 4) lack of leisure skills 5) high leisure constraints, and 6) low self-motivation. Based on this finding, it may be said that low leisure functioning (related to most of these factors) leads to leisure boredom, and drug abuse appears to be a by-product of malfunction of leisure. When adolescents does not know what to do and how to enjoy their leisure to excape from daily boredom, they have nothing but deviant alternatives (e.g., drugs). Based on the all of these assumptions, the new theoretical paradigm was created to explain adolescent drug abuses, and implications for future research were discussed, and recommendations were made for adolescent leisure policy.
