The purpose of this study was to find the actual condition of Qi-gong discipline done in the country and determine the effect of Qi-gong discipline upon self-esteem of both the participants and the non-participants. Concretely, the relation between demographical variables and participation degree of Qi-gong discipline(e.g. frequency, term, time, intensity) and the effect of participation in Qi-gong program upon self-esteem were studied. In order to investigate the relation between participation in Qi-gong program and self-esteem two subject groups the participation group of Qi-gong program(303) and the non-participation group(481) were selected. The population was grown-up persons including college students who lived in the Metropolis of Seoul and the six megalopolises of Pusan, Kwangju, Taejon, Incheon, ans Taegu. To determine the effect of participation in Qi-gong program upon self-esteem, the questionnaires were used positive mental health(self-esteem). Pilot-studv was conducted in order to verify reliability and validity and the final revised and complementary ones were used in this study. In analyzing data, the statistical analysis methods used in this study were T-test, analysis of variance, regression analysis. Upon obtaining above results, the following conclusive statements were made. Firstly, self-esteem varied according to the demographical characteristics of the participants of Qi-gong discipline. Male subjects had higher degree of self-esteem than female subjects. And the group of people between the ages of 40 and 50 in age, the group of college(University) graduate people in educational background, the group of married people in marital status, and the group of people earning 2,500,000-3,000,000 won a month in family income had higher degree of self-esteem. Secondly, there were significant differences between the participants and the non-participants of Qi-gong discipline in positive mental health(self-esteem). The participants of Qi-gong discipline. That is, it appeared that Qi-gong discipline proved to be good for the mental health of people. Thirdly, the participation in Qi-gong discipline produced an effect on mental health. In practicing Qi-gong, the greater the intensity of participation and the longer the time/period of participation, the greater its effect on mental health was. And the greater the intensity of participation and the longer the period of participation, the greater its effect upon physical health was. In conclusion, through the participation in Qi-gong discipline, it was thought that Qi-gong should have an effects on self-esteem.
