An interesting female character drawn by Mishima Yukio is a “mother” image. In many cases, they are set as persons beyond society"s norms and common sense such as homicide, especially emphasizing the lack of “motherhood”. They are largely narcissism, and are often drawn as mothers who rule children. That is, it can be generalized with an extraordinary woman who deviated from conventional “femininity” of obligation, chastity, “motherhood”. In this paper, in terms of departing from the “femininity” supposed to be prescriptive, such women’s nature is regarded as “monstrous”, we confirm that it is the “modern family” statue of modern Japan, which is the background behind the appearance of these female characters in Mishima Yukio’s literature.
Postwar Japan"s “modern family” has a modern gender role division that a man places his life in the “public domain”, that is, the outside work, and the woman sticks to the role of a full-time housewife in the home. The appearance of a family that (apparently) exists by husband"s authority control is clearly depicted in Mishima"s work and the woman departing from the authoritarian rule of her husband, or rather ruling her husband, is drawn as a “monstrous” existence.In the context of “modern family” view, it is the greatest purpose of this paper to consider the genealogy of female literature, villainess heroine literature as one important flow in Mishima literature.
