This work is a follow-up of previous studies on semantic categories of adjectives(2017a) and nouns(2017b). The purpose of this present study is to analyze the distribution of verbs’ semantic categories used in discourses of two different youth groups(general youths (GY), delinquent youths (DY)). In this study, we firstly extracted the list of verbs and the concordances from the discourse data collected in the previous works. Secondly, we distinguished different meanings of each verb depending on lexico-semantic criteria. Thirdly, we matched each verb meaning to its corresponding concept node of CoreNet. Lastly, we analyzed the distribution of verbs. As a result, the ratio of verbs(NTV/NTW) and the ratio of different verbs(NDV/NDW) were significantly higher in DY group than GY group. However, lexical diversity(NDW/NTW) and verb diversity(NDV/NTV) were almost the same in the two groups. For the semantic categories, the verbs used in the corpus were widely distributed in the three top nodes: [abstract thing], [abstract fact], and [abstract relationship]. Especially they were concentrated in the subcategories of [abstract fact]. GY group most frequently used [exchange], [relationship/reconciliation], [respect/trust], [affection/dislike], while DY group frequently used [come/go], [meeting], [entertaining], [trust/betray], [mocking], and so on. In addition, the distribution of semantic categories of verbs commonly used by the two groups was related to concept of the discourse topic <friend> in each group. On the contrary, the distribution of verbs’ semantic categories appeared only in a group tend to reflect specific environment of each group. These results can be applied to language intervention for adolescents with language learning disability and automatic distinction of discourse types of youths based on semantic category of verbs.
