At the last part of As You Like It, an old religious man met Duke Frederick on the skirts of the Forest of Arden and made him converted. So Frederick stopped the marching into the forest with his army to kill his brother Duke Senior, and left the earthly world, giving back his crown and all the lands to the exiled. By doing this, the old hermit reversed the fates of Duke Senior, his lords, his daughter Rosalind, Orlando, Oliver, and Celia as well. It’s marvelous that the religious man led the duke to his conversion with some question with him. What question is it? This query, however, tends to be forgotten in the noise of the happy ending. Only Jaques showed a keen interest in the religious life Duke Frederick accepted, and wanted to be taught by him. He went to see the duke, not the religious man himself, though. Who is the old religious man, and where has he gone? These questions are the starting points of this paper.
And at the beginning part, as Duke Frederick banished Rosalind from his court, her cousin Celia proposed that they leave for Arden together and declared that they would go to liberty, not to banishment. Was what she said fulfilled at the ending? The place that Rosalind and Celia headed for was the forest of Arden, where Orlando also arrived and then his elder brother Oliver appeared.
In the forest, every character experiences a meaningful meeting with the other being respectively. The encounter leads them to the meeting with the selves of their own, and from there each person enters the way to greater liberty. Another question related to liberty in this play is what the title ‘As You Like It’ means. With these questions, this paper pursues the characters’ journey to spiritual conversions.
