The purpose of this paper is to investigate the aspects of basic word orders and their variations in English and Korean, and the interactions with the iconicity of distance principle for the basic word orders and their variations. The basic word orders are discussed in terms of word orders within the major constituents such as verb-object constructions and multiple adverbial constructions. The followings are argued in this paper. The first claim is that there are basic word orders in Korean as well as in English and the canonical symmetric arrangement between the (basic) word orders in English and Korean. The second claim is that basic word orders and their variations can be equally accounted for in terms of distance principle of iconicity, even though the principle applies more strongly for English.
