Looking for Richard (1996) is a documentary film presenting the process of making a drama rather than being an adaptation of Shakespeare’s original work Richard III. Al Pacino, the director as well as the actor in this film, tries to reproduce Richard III in a way that modern audiences can easily understand. Pacino simplifies the complex historical backgrounds and Richard’s character. Richard is a complicated character who reveals a wide variety of personalities, but Pacino focuses on Richard’s evil and cruelty, and deceit in his manipulation of power. The focus is on how to characterize and reproduce the personality of the original character. Pacino selects particular scenes that reveal these aspects and explains and discusses how the actors are working on these scenes. The film cuts across two areas of documentary and dramatic performance, but the focus is on the process of making a dramatic performances by interpreting, discussing, and practicing Shakespearean characters. Pacino is a director, an actor, a guide to method acting, an interviewer, a narrator, and a commentator in this documentary film. This article discusses the role of Pacino and his selection of certain scenes from Shakespeare’s original work. Moreover, it examines his rendering of those scenes and responses of the audience to the rendering.
