The paper considers an opportunity-based preventive replacement model in which the system can be replaced preventively at pre-planned times or at opportunistic time points with different replacement costs. It is assumed that the opportunities of preventive maintenance occur randomly. A combined replacement policy is proposed in which the system is replaced preventively (PR) at the opportunity time point which occur first after a certain age T<SUB>0</SUB> or at planned time T<SUB>1</SUB>, whichever occurs first. Otherwise, if it fails before reaching the PR time, it is replaced correctively at the system failure. The expected cost rate is derived and the optimal (T<SUB>0</SUB>, T<SUB>1</SUB>) are obtained to minimize the expected cost rate. The cost of corrective replacement, preventive replacement at planned time, and at opportunity time are considered in the expected cost rate function. The numerical examples are done with various cost parameters and mean values of the inter-arrival opportunity time.
