“Five Calls” is a christian novel written by Chen Chunsheng, it reflects the vernacular Chinese usage of the late Qing Dynasty. Although many research has been done on the novel, the study on its grammar has yet to be developed. Taking reduplicated adverbs as the research object, this paper makes exhaustive statistics on it in this novel, and analyzes the characteristics of reduplicated adverbs from syntax and pragmatics. Syntactically, reduplicated adverbs are classified into several categories according to the characteristics of primary form: the reduplicated adverbs with primary form of adverbs, the reduplicated adverbs with primary form of adjectives, the reduplicated adverbs with primary form of verbs, the reduplicated adverbs with primary form of nouns and so on. Meanwhile, according to the structural forms of reduplicated adverbs, they are classified into four categories as AA, AABB, ABB, and ABAB. Pragmatically, reduplicated adverbs can strengthen time, degree, scope, mood, frequency and modality, and make language more vivid.
