This study explored relationships between community integration and social capital in rural tourism development in South Korea. The framework of this study was directed at understanding the effects of 4 latent factors that distinguished individual from collective social capital. Two research methods (i.e., questionnaires for local residents and interviews for community leaders) were used. As a result, there were different results with community leaders and residents. The resident survey indicated that cognitive social capital exhibited a stronger influence on community integration than structural social capital. On the other hand, community leaders considered both cognitive and structural social capital equally important to community integration. The study demonstrates evidence to understand community integration. In other words, it is confirmed that there are needs to share awareness about rural tourism development based on trust between local residents and leaders. This study could contribute to extend the scope of social capital from its personal to collective operations with implications for the sustainability of rural tourism development.
