Report Errors
In this study, drawing on Michel Foucault’s work about governmentality, I first describe how Korean universities manage and control professors. Foucault identifies three governmental mechanisms or apparatuses: the legal-juridical, the disciplinary and the apparatus of security. Korean universities becoming increasingly neoliberal apply these three apparatuses to control their academic subjects. Some private universities still use the juridical system to tame their professors and practically all universities employ the disciplinary mechanism of Internet-based surveillance to produce embodied conformity of professors. But it is the apparatus of security that the neoliberal universities rely on to make their professors more competitive and more docile. The apparatus of security consists of policies and practices for evaluating the academic performance of professors. These policies and practices undermine the civic, political and social values of education and research. The possible response of professors to resist this neoliberal management can be found only in the collective and organizational movement without which some individual efforts like parrhesia (truth-telling) would be useless.
