This study utilized longitudinal data of child body mass index (BMI) to explore developmental trajectories and to examine whether this trajectory change could be classified into heterogeneous types. The study also aimed to examine the characteristics of children in each type and to identify the differences in socio-emotional development. The 7th- through 9th-year data (2014-2016) of the Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC) were used for analysis. A total of 967 participants were selected. The results are as follows. First, the latent class growth analysis revealed three distinct patterns of change in child BMI across children aged 5 and first and second graders in elementary school: “potential obesity”, “obesity alleviation”, “normal-maintaining”. Second, significant differences in socio-emotional development were found among the three types. Specifically, children in the “potential obesity” type, considered being at risk of obesity during the second grade, had lower levels of self-esteem and overall happiness than those in the “normal-maintaining” type. In addition, “potential obesity” children were shown to have lower peer adaptability and to experience more peer problems than those in the “obesity alleviation” and “normal-maintaining”. This study is significant in that it examined the change trajectories of early childhood BMI at an individual level. By paying additional attention to the differences in socio-emotional development. this study suggests the rationale for intervention in obese children.
