The purpose of this study is to clarify the method of lyrics composition and its cultural meaning of 〈Ingwamun(因果文)〉 in the 18th century. 〈Ingwamun(因果文)〉is a different version of 〈Hoesim-gok(回心曲)〉 lyrics, which was popular in the 19th century, and is referred to in the discussion of 〈Hoesim-gok(回心曲)〉. However, this study focuses on current 〈Hoesim-gok(回心曲)〉 lyrics, mostly after the 19th century, and 〈Ingwamun(因果文)〉 lyrics, which came before 〈Hoesim-gok(回心曲)〉 lyrics. Through a full discussion of 〈Ingwamun(因果文)〉, the study tries to provide a basis for the phenomenon whereby 〈Hoesim-gok(回心曲)〉 exploded in popularity.
〈Ingwamun(因果文)〉 lyrics are contained in 〈Yeombulbogunmun(念佛普勸文)〉 and include 〈Seowang-ga(西往歌)〉, 〈Daebuljungsunengumsinju(大佛頂首楞嚴神呪)〉, 〈Guanumbosalyeoyirunju(觀音菩薩如意輪呪)〉 on the one votive document. At that time, the Yeombul-ceremony was a formal procedure in the first half of the ceremony and the various procedures fitted the situation in the second half. 〈Ingwamun(因果文)〉 was played in the second half of the ceremony. Therefore, the lyrics were structured using the ‘causal lyrics composition methods’ and focused on the ‘life and death of the human being’, which the public can be interested in and easily understand.
In addition, 〈Ingwamun(因果文)〉 lyrics are loosely connected in form and content. The reason why the lyrics were popular at that time is related to ‘Yeombul’ as the Buddhist lyrics playing method. Also, the lyrics are anonymous, which differs from 〈Seowang-ga(西往歌)〉. Since the content more closely suited the public’s taste, the work was one of the methods chosen by the Buddhist temple to solve the worries and desires of the contemporary public. This helps us understand that the Buddhist temples in the previous period were only at the beginning, while the missionary activities are developed in a more advanced form.
