In the global era, China recognizes the importance of the influence of foreign culture and is making a lot of effort to make Chinese codes. In the field of cartoons and animation, the Chinese market continues to expand under the influence of Japan and the United States, and the content types are becoming more diverse as the medium changes. Especially young people born in the 1990s were affected. Since the 1980s, TVs have become affordable in Chinese households. therefore, Japanese animation came into China. In the 1990s, after seeing Japanese animations on TV, the Internet became popular so more Japanese animations came into the Chinese market. During this period, the Chinese animation industry was stagnant, and the comics and animation industries were not actively developed. In this situation, China’s manga and animation market is occupied by the fresh world view and unique story of Japan rather than the ordinary works of China. Its influence is still maintained, and Chinese manga and anime still can not escape the Japanese outline style and show the shadow of Japan. Among them, ‘Otaku’ can be seen as a typical consumer feature showing this phenomenon. Especially in the global era, Chinese cartoons and animated otaku act more like Japanese otaku, and even continue otaku culture to their own social life. The otaku phenomenon of these cartoons and animations is projecting a miniature of the entertainment culture of modern Chinese people. However, the trends of social culture and culture consumption differ between Japanese and Chinese otaku, so the tendency of otaku is different.
This paper examines the cultural and psychological characteristics of otaku in comics and animation works. Especially, by analyzing these characteristics as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, we will examine the cultural and psychological characteristics that are different from Japan in Otaku subculture of China. Otaku culture is becoming globalized not only in Japan but also in the development of society and technology, but it develops differently according to cultural characteristics of each country. The Chinese otaku features revealed through this study are expected to have profound effects not only on cartoons and animations but also on cultural contents in China.
