This study examines through returnees what gender differences exist about the beliefs of developing and maintaining the foreign language in and out of school, and what causes the different beliefs. To explore such different beliefs, this research employed the combined method of quantitative and qualitative designs. The quantitative data were collected with the questionnaire from the 116 returnees in the Seoul area, and qualitative data were collected through interviews. The finding demonstrated that most girls had a tendency to believe that they were improving their English through schoolwork while boys had a tendency to have perspectives that they were improving their English by using it in their daily lives as much as they were learning it in academic settings. This study shed light on different gender perspectives of the returnees about improving their English skills, associating with self-efficacy and attribution theories.
