In Toni Morrison’s novels, fantasy is a fixture in the characters’ reality often enough to be classified as magical realism. Morrison wants readers to change how they understand life and the world, coming head to head with confusion and questions that fantasy conjures up in the text. How is it possible for readers to change the way they live through the fantasy represented in the novels? Morrison uses fantasies, such as mysterious incidents and figures, to visualize the transformation of her characters through the process of rememory. Fantasy ensures readers not only realize the limits of the rigid structure of reality, but also look for the openness which represents an exit from them. Only when the fantasy in the text creates openness in reality can such fantasy be represented through its own meanings. Looking for openness is an active action that makes us take responsibility for our own lives freely and of our own will, even when we are caught in circumstances reduced to the concept of fate. The openness which fantasy creates forms the foundation that creates a new relationship and effect that transcends existing circumstances. To argue for the power of fantasy, this paper justifies the power of time in the rememory process and the realization of time by incorporating concepts from Gilles Deleuze’s virtual reality.
