The Chinese modern theater was a symbol of modernity in the early period of the 20th century in China. For the same reason, “New Women” also were another symbol of modernity, but were not accepted in those times.In the masterpieces of Chinese modern plays between 1910 and 1918, the “New Women” who are described positively were women who observe all the traditional rules of Man-Centered society. On the contrary, the negative ones were women who resist against the rules or show their own desire actively. In those times, the “New Women” was just a abstract and ideal thing, and was very difficult to exist actually yet. But, in Xincunzheng(新村正, 1918), the masterpiece of the theatrical company in the Nankai(南開)-school, the “New Women” began to appear positively, and it was a remarkable change in this period.
