Secularization was a dominant thesis in sociology of religion. However, there are some difficulties to understand religion in contemporary world in terms of secularization thesis, especially Peter Berger’s. Indeed, having through massive argument, it is clear that there are many exceptions to secularization theory because of the different process of modernization, pluralization, and individualization in non-western world such as Third World. Korean Protestantism also has its own periods of growth and decline within the different historical process of rapid socio-cultural changes and economic growth. Korean Protestantism can be conceived as another exception of secularization theory. Thus, beyond secularization thesis, this article attempts to characterize the remarkable growth of Korean Protestantism and analyze its current decline.
