The life of D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930) was under the tremendous changes in culture, politics, economics, and philosophy. The development of science accelerated modernization and more information led to new inventions and explorations of civilization. Lawrence’s works represent an extended reflection upon the dehumanizing effects of modernity and industrialization. In them, Lawrence confronts issues related to emotional health, vitality, and instincts against modernization and civilization. He continually sought the means to overcome the alienation typical of industrialized society through the fusion of man with woman, man with man, and man with nature. This study examines politics of love in Lawrence’s essays which reflect the political, economic, religious circumstances in the early twentieth century. Lawrence says that the most sacred thing is love and the sacred can be realized in the love between a man and a woman. Only in love can man restore his true emotional self. Lawrence writes that “it is the problem of to-day, the establishment of a new relation, or the readjustment of the old one, between men and women.” Lawrence’s views about relations between the sexes, and about sex differences are perhaps among his most controversial-and they have frequently been misrepresented. Lawrence emphasizes that the most important thing for the true recovery of modern civilization and society is the establishment of new appearances of love between the sexes. In brief, Lawrence’s politics of love embodies the new cultural spirit in which the individual sexual desire and political aspiration are essentially connected.
