This thesis purposes to consider the possibility of modern men to regenerate the blood consciousness which makes them become an ultimate being. Lawrence thought that the nature of American Indian’s blood consciousness was contrary to the nature of the white, egoistic consciousness. The white consciousness is cut off from that experience of identification with his tribe and with the “great central source where is rest and unspeakable renewal”, that is, the experience “of the human blood-stream, not of the mind or spirit. Lawrence suggests we need to make the effort to see again as American Indians see, without forgetting we are ourselves and try to overcome the limitations of the white consciousness. The sleeping Indians in New Mexico and their old gods symbolize our inner sleeping blood consciousness lost and suppressed by nerve-brain consciousness. Lawrence regarded the extreme materialism and mechanism of America as merely one stage in the life process: like the setting sun and the ripe pomegranate, the ripe fruit of mechanism may have reached its peak, thus splitting open with the seeds of its destruction. He anticipated that America, land of “nascent demon people” would soon burst open, scattering the seeds of what will regenerate mankind. Lawrence suggests that a new world is not a special place and time but an ultimate state of being to reach through the change of consciousness. Lawrence urges his readers to wake up and to regenerate the blood consciousness for the whole life to harmonize with the universe.
