On December 24, 2012 the Cabinet decided to re‐designate the Hangul Day as a national holiday with day‐off. It has been excluded from the national holiday since 1991. It is shame that Hangul Day has been a socio‐political issue. It was the result that the historical and cultural significances of Hangul are not well recognized. Socio‐politically, Hangul made possible that Korea created centralized kingship faster than any other major state around the world in the fifteenth century. Replacing century‐old Buddhism with Neo‐Confucianism from China was a major risk Joseon started with. For the political and historical justification, Joseon court needed a communication channel with commoners and Hangul was the major tool for the communication. At the same time, Sejong the Great needed to replace the powerful yangban class who helped the creation of the new dynasty. Breaking the monopoly of power from the domination of use of Chinese characters, Sejong invented a new writing system. A new group of yangbans who were ready to sacrifice the monopoly to support the government made it possible for Sejong to create the sustainable centralized government. The most significant achievement of the invention of Hangul is the creation of true written tradition of Korean civilization. Koreans began to write their thoughts and emotions with alteration and limitation by using Chinese characters. At the same time, the invention took place at the peak of Chinese cultural influence. With Hangul, Korea was able to create the cultural identity. It is the most important significance of the invention of Hangul. Hangul is the foundation of the Korean culture. At the time of globalization, cultural identity is the key element of the civilized country. Korea became a major country in the world and Hangul made it possible.

2012년 12월 24일 국무회의에서 한글날을 다시 국경일로 지정하고 공휴일에 포함시켰다. 이를 환영하는 입장이 대다수지만 한글날이 정치 사회적 상황에 따라 그 중요성이 변화한다는 것은 실로 개탄스러운 일이다. 이는 한글이 한국사에서 차지하는 독보적인 가치와 그 문화, 역사적 의의를 정확히 인식하지 못하고 있는 현실을 보여준 것이다. 정치사회적으로 볼 때 한글의 역사적 의의는 세계에서 가장 빠르게 중앙집권적 정치체제를 확립한 것을 들 수 있다. 천년 이상을 지속해 온 불교문화를 중국의 성리학체제로 변화시켰다는 점에서 조선은 정치적 부담을 갖고 시작했다. 특히 성리학의 정치적 이념이 중앙집권체제의 구축에 있었기에 이를 구현하고자 하는 노력이 필요했다. 역사적, 정치적 당위성을 위해 백성과의 소통이 필요했고 그 결과가 한글창제였다. 동시에 국가 창건의 주역들을 정치 중심에서 배제하기 위해 새로운 글자체계로 한자를 통한 기득권층에 쇄신을 추구했던 것이다. 자신들의 기득권을 포기하고 새로운 문자체제를 받아들여 군주에게 충성심을 보인 새로운 세력으로 지속 가능한 중앙집권체제를 유지하려 했던 것이 한글의 정치사회적 의의이다. 그러나 무엇보다도 중요한 것은 한글창제의 문화적 의의이다. 천 년을 넘게 이어져온 한자의 사용은 구전문화에서 한국문화가 벗어날 수 있는 중요한 계기가 되었다. 그러나 한국인의 생각과 정서를 글로 표현하기 위해서는 한자에 맞추어 변형하거나 포기해야 하는 문제가 지속되었다. 한글로 인해 한국인의 언어를 있는 그대로 표현하고 기록해 진정한 기록문화가 시작되었다는 것이 한글의 문화적 의의이다. 동시에 성리학적 체제 구축을 완성한 중국문화 수용이 정점에 다 달았던 세종대왕 시기에 한글이 발명되면서 한국적 문화 정체성이 구축된 것도 매우 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 한글은 한국의 문화를 한국적으로 구축하는 기본 토대이다. 현대 세계화가 진행되면서 문화적 정체성은 선진국의 필수 요소가 되었다. 이를 가능케 한 한글의 의의를 정확히 인식하는 것이 무엇보다 필요한 시점이다.
