Computer-Mediated Communication(CMC) Tools such as discussion room, instant message messenger, and bulletin board support a variety of communicative activities of sharing information, mutually exchanging opinions, and negotiating meaning between a student and a teacher or among students in teaching-learning environments using Digital Textbook. However, since these CMC tools are based on text-based messages there are some limitations in expressing affective and emotional responses or reactions. Therefore, this research developed a prototype for Emoticon Supporting Tool for emotional affordances in Digital Textbook mediated communication environments. Its prototype of a two-dimensional circular spectrum was generated by a framework taking the form of a emoticon classified table on the basis of 6x3 emotion matrix (ecstacy-joy-serenity, amazement-surprise- distraction, grief-sadness-pensiveness, rage-anger-annoyance, terror-fear-apprehension, loathing-disgust-boredom) containing two axes of the kinds and the intensity of fundamental emotions. This Emoticon Supporting Tool is expected to drive active, dynamic, and diverse students' interactions through perceiving and monitoring their own and others’ emotions, and expressing and regulating their own emotions. Further research is needed on how instructional designers evaluate and apply students' and instructors' emotional experiences and reactions in designing and developing new media in education like Digital Textbook.
