Analysis of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in environment has been widely carried out in advanced countries. Especially in the US, various authorities including the US Environmental Protection Agency, the US Food and Drug Administration are identifying pharmaceuticals and their metabolites in environment and developing a management method to control them. The Korean Government and other research units also have initiated collecting water samples from national streams and trying to quantifying PPCP levels in their environment. In order to accurately assess the toxicity and risk of PPCPs and their metabolites, a reliable analytical method to qualitatively and quantitatively measure them is essential. In this paper, current extraction/quantification methods for PPCPs analysis were reviewed to give a guidance to other scientists and engineers who start or even are undergoing PPCP related researches. In addition, survey studies on PPCPs in environment performed in Korea and other countries were briefly summarized.
