HS from Han River water as source water were isolated and extracted by physicochemical methods to investigate their characteristics. The HS were analyzed by an element analyzer, and their characteristics were compared with various commercial humic materials. The molar ratios of H/C and O/C in the HS molecules were 1.464 and 0.759, respectively. That is, aromaticity and humification degree of HS extracted from Han River water were relatively lower than those from other rivers, while portion of oxygenated functional groups was relatively higher. In the adsorption behavior of HS described by rate studies, the adsorption rate of FA to activated carbon higher than those of HA, and use of a coal-based activated carbon was more effective in adsorption of HS. The adsorption rate of HS on the activated carbons generally increased in proportion to the molar ratios of H/C and O/C in the HS molecules, and these molar ratios reflected humification degree and hydrophilicity of HS. Consequently, the adsorption of HS to activated carbon was greatly influenced by humification degree and hydrophilicity of HS, and the adsorption capacity of HS on activated carbons could increase through ozonation to reduce aromaticity of HS.
