To maintain good relationship with others, we should use polite expressions. But it is not easy for foreigners to use such Korean expressions. So to teach these to foreigners properly, we need plenty linguistic study results and teaching methods about them. However, we can hardly find linguistic or pedagogical study results about them.
In this paper, I tried to build the category of Korean polite expression and classify the expressions into four major groups for Korean language education for foreigners as the following; (1)level of Grammar (2)level of lexicon (3)level of pragmatics (4)the others Then I contrasted the category with Japanese counterpart. There are many similarities between the two languages. But there are some differences as well. So we should be more careful when we teach the Korean polite expressions which are different from Japanese language.
