Purpose: The goal of this study was to introduce the PICC program for patients with IV therapy and to present thenursing standard and the complication related to PICC.
Method: These outcomes of PICC program were collected during the period from November 2001 to April 2004.
Result: A total of 457 PICCs were inserted into 349 patients by the IV CNS. The cases continuously increased and various patients units were referred. PICC program was extended to outpatient as well as inpatient. The mean duration of catheter use was 23 days; dwelltime ranged form less than 1 day to 247 days. The 457 catheters were in place for a total of 7,659 days. The reasons for removal were completed therapy in 123 cases(36.9%), patient death in 84 cases(25.2%), and mechanical or functional PICC problem in 70cases(21.0%). The 103 PICCs removed for presumed infection, phlebitis, edema(30.9%). The infection rate was calculated at accounted for 0.09% per 7,659 catheter days.
Conclusion: PICCs are safe and effective ways of delivering a variety of medical therapies via the central venous system. Therefore PICC program is rapidly growing popularity and required an extended course of IV therapy.
