Purpose: This study was to investigate the effect of warming therapy on change of body temperature and discomfort after warming therapy was applied to abdominal surgery patients taking general anesthesia. Method: The subjects were forty abdominal surgery patients(20 subjects in experimental group and the other 20 subjects in control group) who were under the general anesthesia. The experimental group who underwent the programmed warming therapy during operation and recovery period, while the control group underwent usual general care. Results: Experimental group was showed lower body temperature than the control group at the end of operation. Experimental group with warming therapy during recovery was showed lower body temperature than the control group at the end of recovery. Experimental group with warming therapy during surgery and recovery was showed less discomfort due to low body temperature than the control group. Conclusion: The results of this study impliys that the warming therapy for surgical patients during operation and recovery can be an effective nursing intervention as a prophylaxis to moderate change of body temperature and relief of discomfort. Therefore, continuous nursing intervention such as warming therapy during operation and recovery would be recommended.
