This paper aims to analyze the myths of mothers and elementary school teachers about child sexual abuse and how this results in the practice and perception of prevention education for children. Differences between child sexual abuse prevention education for mothers and teachers have led to a reliance on myths about child sexual abuse that undermines the effectiveness of prevention education for children. Data was collected by survey from 822 mothers with elementary school children and 389 elementary school teachers in the Seoul and Gyeonggi-do area. The data was analyzed with the SPSS 19.0 Program verified by X2 and t. The results are as follows: first, the survey showed that mothers believed that children who were victims of sexual abuse were likely to become sexual offenders when they became adults. Furthermore, teachers believed that children were likely to lie when stating their deposition about alleged abuse. There were a few myths that showed a slight difference between mothers and teachers. Second, the paper analyzed whether variables influenced the myths that mothers and teachers believed about child sexual abuse. It showed that mothers whose first child was in the lower grade of elementary school and mothers who had previous child sexual abuse prevention education believed in more myths than others. However, teachers did not have a particular variable which related to differences in their belief in myths. Third, the level of reliance on myths reflects differences in the content of education on child sexual abuse prevention. Lastly, the level of reliance on myths indicates the need for improving child sexual abuse prevention education. This paper presents a direction for child sexual abuse prevention education and emphasizes the role of parents and teachers for more effective prevention education for children.
