This paper examines recent developments of U.S.-Japanese security relations and their impacts upon the security affairs in the Northeast Asia. A special attention is given to the expansion of the U.S.-Japanese defense cooperation and Japan's security policy change after 9/11. The U.S. and Japan had decided to level up the alliance and share mutual strategic concerns. Washington and Tokyo have a mutual interest in keeping China from embarking on any regional military adventurism or from becoming a dominant player in Northeast Asia. Furthermore, the U.S. and Japan are preparing to move their military forces westward to protect Taiwan. The recent strategic realignment demonstrates the evolution of the U.S.-Japanese security alliance to include a more active Japan and Taiwan. Since 9/11, Tokyo has become more aggressive in asserting its own defensive capabilities and priorities.Beijing sees the growing assertiveness of Japan as a challenge, but also as a potential opportunity. Beijing sees room for cooperation with Washington based on a potential mutual threat from Tokyo. China begins to share more common interests with the U.S. in security and economic affairs. China hopes to continue the present stable Sino-U.S. relations in the coming future. Peace and stability in the Northeast Asia region will not be possible without the comprehensive integration of China into the regional and international community. Accordingly, efforts should be made to convince China that the stengthening of the U.S.-Japan security alliance is not directed at a third country. To mitigate misunderstanding, the U.S. and Japan should initiate trilateral security discussions with China.
