This study aimed to examine the general characteristics of religious idea of Mozi, and to investigate its origin. For this purpose, it is required to study the religious of the Shang(商) Period, a religious phenomenon before Mozi. Thus, this study examined the religion of the Shang Period and investigated the religious idea of Mozi. Religious characteristics of the Shang Period were to consider Gui-Shen(鬼神) as the dominion of the universe, and the king of Gui-Shen was called Shangdi(上帝). While Shangdi was not a creator, it was the supreme god reigning over the all natures of cosmos. For this reason, in the Shang Period, there was a huge ritual to ask blessing from Shangdi Gui-Shen. It was one of the most important events in the country. In the religious idea of Mozi, he explained the gods’ world with Shangdi Gui-Shen, and he regarded that the operation of cosmos was made by Gui-Shen, and Gui-Shen was operated by the order of Shangdi. In addition, the significance of ritual was extremely stressed. In this regard, this study determined that the religious idea of Mozi inherited that of the Shang Period.
