This guide to ‘the current state of Christianity’ in North Africa and the Middle East (here including Cyprus and the Sudan) is written by two ordained ministers of the United Church of Christ. Betty Jane Bailey is a consultant to the Middle East Office of the Common Global Ministries Board of that church, while J. Martin Bailey is director of development for Worldwide Faith News and media consultant to an interfaith project. After brief visits to various parts of the Middle East in 1969 and 1982, and a 1990 sabbatical for Betty Jane Bailey in Jerusalem, the couple spent the years 1994-98, first, in Jerusalem, then, in Bethlehem. Upon their return to the U.S., they decided to devote the rest of their lives to Middle East issues.
