Based on travelogues to Joseon written by officials of the Wu Zhangqing Military Camp who were responsible for subjugating the Imogullan Military Uprising, such as Zhou Jialu's(周家祿) Aoyijoseonsamjong(奧簃朝鮮三種)),Xue Peirong's(薛培榕) Dongbeongiyo(東藩紀要), Zhu Mingpan's(朱銘盤)Gyejihwaheonyujib(桂之華軒遺集), this paper examined the then Chinese perception of Joseon, the conflict between the Wu Zhangqing Military Camp officials and Yuan Shikai, and their relations with Joseon intellectuals. in 1882.
When the Imogullan Military Uprising broke out, the Qing government dispatched a 3,000-strong support military unit to Joseon under the command of Admiral Wu Zhangqing. This large-scale troop dispatching led to the subjugation of the Imogullan Military Uprising, the arrest of Regent Daewongun, and Qing's invervention in Joseon's politics and diplomacy.
This consequently brought the Joseon-Qing relations to a new dimension.
The three travelogues, which could be the Qing military's situation report on Joseon, are considered the most accurate records of the then Chinese's perception of Joseon, the conflict between Wu Zhangqing Military Camp officials and Yuan Shikai, and their relations with Joseon intellectuals in 1882, presumably a time when Korea-China relations began to change.
Yuan Shikai was a dependent under Wu Zhangqing Military Camp, and became No. 21st ranked official during the Imogullan Military Uprising. He betrayed Wu Zhangqing who helped him rise to that position, as well as his colleagues. To achieve greater ambitions, he followed Li Hongzhang, waved the flag of Northern Ocean(北洋), rode luxury horses, acted like an high-ranking official, and abused his power. Thus, the Wu Zhangqing Military Camp sent a letter to the Joseon government, saying that while Yuan Shikai's power was limited to training the new military camp, he intervened in Joseon's all political affairs, criticizing his serious arrogation.
Yuan Shikai, in just less than two years in service, freely and arrogantly accessed the Joseon royal household. This suggests how the Joseon government was played into the hand of Yuan Shikai. With a new geography being formed in East Asia, triggered by the Imogullan Military Uprising, the Wu Zhangqing Military Camp officials were at the center of such a move, and their perception of Joseon had to be complicated and double, making them proud as the people of the suzerain state. However, behind such pride were China's concerns for the future and the sense of its traditional unity with Joseon.
