The purpose of this study is to analyze the types of questions made by Korean learners in the debates. For this purpose, this study reviewed theories and dissertations on the questions and showed that questions are used not just to seek information but to convey the speaker’s assertion as well. Based on this, this study focused on the degree of seeking information and the degree of implying oppositional assertion in the questions in debates. For the analysis, this study examined 4 debates of Korean learners, and 2 debates from Korean native speakers were used for comparison. The result of the analysis showed that there are two major question types, which are clarification questions and oppositional questions. Oppositional questions are devided again into questions to reinforce the speaker’s own claim and questions to weaken the opponent’s claim. The result showed a number of different aspects between the Korean learners and the Korean native speakers. As a whole, the Korean learners asked questions of a less number and with a lower diversity compared to the Korean native speakers.
