Bathing and mineral treatment is known to have an ameliorative effect on skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis. This study is performed to investigate the bathing effect of mineral water containing high concentration of Ca, Mg, Na, Cl and Sr on DNCB-induced atopic dermatitis lesion in hairless mice. After confirmation of atopic dermatitis induction the mice was bathed in mineral water and tap water (control) respectively in a temperature of 35±1℃ for 20 min twice a day during 6 wks. We observed that sebum content showed significant increase (p<0.05), but water content was similar to control group. pH showed slightly acid although it had no significance. All kinds of leukocytes measured here showed tendency of lower numbers than control group. The ROS scavenging effect of mineral water revealed significantly high on HaCaT culture cells treated with H_2O_2 compared with that of tap water (p<0.01). Collectively, our results suggest that regular bathing in mineral-rich water has positive effect on the skin of atopic dermatitis.
