Background : The CA-1 area of hippocampus is one of the most susceptible brain tissue in ischemia. The Mongolian gerbil has been known as a good ischemic animal model showing various cellular changes. This study was performed to observe the short term morphological changes following transient forebrain ischemia of the Mongolian gerbil. Methods : Transient ischemia of brain was induced in diethylether-anesthetized gerbils by both common carotid arteries pulling method for 5 minutes. The control group was sham-operated only. At 1, 6, 24, 72, and 120 hours after 5 minutes transient global ischemia, decapitation and removal of brain was performed. The brain tissues were stained by hematoxylin and eosin. The morphologic changes of ischemic damaged hippocampal cell were examined by light microscopy. The changes are vacuolation, pyknosis, eosinophilia, and ghost cell change. Results : The earliest changes were vacuolation of cytoplasm which were decreased after 24 hours postischemia. But pyknosis of nuclei, eosinophilia and ghost cells were slowly increased by 72 hours then abruptly augmented after 72 hours post-ischemia. In the CA-1 sector, all types of morphologic change were appear earlier and more abundant than CA-3. Conclusions : Each sector of the hippocampus showed different degrees of cellular change to ischemia, so called selective vulnerability. Korean Journal of Stroke 2000;2(2): 202~206
