This study attempted to investigate the hair protection effects of the eco-friendly natural substance ‘earthworm autolysates’. For this, the effects of earthworm autolysates on hair damage and morphological characteristics after an acid wave perm were comparatively analyzed via Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and observation of hair thickness, tensile strength and wave formation and durability. When observed with SEM, the hair cuticle was smoother and neater in the earthworm autolysates experimental group than in the control group in which earthworm autolysates weren’t used. In terms of hair thickness, hair became thinner after the wave perm. This change was more significant in the control group. As shampooing frequency increased, the change became greater. Tensile strength also increased. In terms of tensile strength growth rate, the experimental group rate was greater than the control group. The duration of the perm wave was much longer in the experimental group. With high wave formation and duration, curl was shorter in the experimental group than in the control group. As shampooing frequency increased, the length of hair gradually increased while the hair retained a similar amount of curl. Considering the results above, it was confirmed that earthworm autolysates had a considerable effect on the reduction of hair damage during an acid wave perm on dyed hair. In addition, wave formation and duration were excellent for the acid wave perm. Therefore, it appears that earthworm autolysates would be very helpful in cosmetology as a natural hair care substance.
