Currently the educational reforms of the elementary and secondary education curriculum have occurred around the world, one of which might be characterized as the competency-based curriculum. This study attempts to grasp the ideas of what the competency is about, why it is important for the 21st century students, and how the competency-based curriculum (particularly, of Geography) looks like through exploring the national(or state) curricula of England, New Zealand, Taiwan, Canada Quebec, US North Carolina, Singapore, Australia, and France among many. In general, such competency-based curricula tend to explicitly emphasize key competencies and tell how geography contributes to foster 21C key competencies selected. Students are expected to have opportunities to develop key competencies through the selection of core(or essential) knowledge, the emphasis of geographic inquiry and skills, which are clarified and well- structured by grade level, and the integration of geographic knowledge and skills in geography curriculum.
