Yeonhaengrok (travel records) is a type of documentary literature created by the traditional tributary relationship between Korea and China. It contains many records regarding the customs, attire and hairstyles of the Qing Dynasty. This study has attempted to examine the contemporary background of the Qing Dynasty during the 18-19thcenturies and the value of yeonhaengrok to comparatively analyze women’s hairstyles as recorded in the travelrecords. This study utilized a diversity of Chinese literature documents to in vestigate the types and characteristics of women’s hairstyle in the Qing Dynasty. Six yeonghaeroks written during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor through the Tongzhi Emperor were examined to analyze women’s Qing Dynasty hairstyles during the 18-19th centuries. In addition, acomparison of the types and characteristics of hairstyles recorded in Chinese literature documents was attempted. In the early Qing Dynasty, Manchu and Han hairstyles were in vogue. In the mid-Qing period, bigpan hairstyles, yuan hairstyles and pangji hairstyles of horizontal style after qianlongdi (Yangpa Hair, Chaja Hair, Gaja Hair, Pa a Hair and Ilja Hair) were popular. As a result, Manchu women started imitating the hairstyles of the Han women, and hairstyles became popular regardless of ethnic background.
