In this work, the degree of hair damage for permanent wave hair was investigated by measuring activation energy from hair protein isotherm. The virgin hair were damaged by treatment of permanent wave and dried naturally. The hair damage was measured by scanning electron microscope (SEM) image, tensile strength, Hunter's color value, and activation energy in aqueous solution. The SEM image in the permanent wave hair showed the loose and shifted scale of the cuticle. The hair damage of the permanent wave hair (2.80±0.63) was higher than that of the virgin hair (1.60±0.52) in the morphological damage observed with SEM image. Lightness (L value) of the permanent wave hair (23.7±0.63) was higher than that of the virgin hair (22.2±0.51) in Hunter's color values (p<0.05), but difference of redness ( a value) and yellowness (b value) was not observed. The tensile strength of the permanent wave hair (135.1±2.47g) was lower than that of the virgin hair (148.3±3.16g) (p<0.05). Also. the activation energy of the permanent wave hair (65.2±3.33kJ/mol) was lower than that of the virgin hair (74.9±3.66kJ/mol) (p<0.05).
