Drawing upon Jacques Derrida’s “deconstructionist” concept of body art, this thesis attempts to examine “deconstructionism” from a different, unique perspective. From this, it is hoped that varied interpretations of its meaning and expression can be appreciated. Derrida’s ‘deconstruction’ concept encourages artists to explore a new way of thinking that makes the viewer feel as if “one is always on the move” through the use of thoughtful and detailed analysis of the objects without excluding its concepts and language. Body art has its limitations and drawbacks- namely, a temporary product of art, a limited exposure of object (model), and an inability to preserve art for a long period of time. The study of body art needs to develop a new relationship of imaginative expression from the traditional shapes through insights of Derrida’s theory of ‘deconstruction’. It re-defines the conformity in shape, freedom in imaginative expression, colorful illustration of setting design and exhibition, and a prolonged means of preserving the art product. It allows the artist to “deconstruct” objects by manipulating its surface and skin, then develop and expand its products in order to pave the way to the next step, which enhances the beauty of body art. body art provides a unique artistic sense of permanently preserving body art, shedding new insight and giving a greater appreciation of body art.
