These days public perception is predominantly shaped by the media such as newspapers and TV, and it is perception that leads to attitudes and behaviors. Consequently, the media that shapes public perception influences public opinion and policy. With respect to crime, this influence is very important. Because in most cases the public gets the information on crime from the media and its potential effect on public perception, fear of crime and public policy. For these reasons, it is needed to examine any information that is reported and compare media coverage of crime to official statistics. This study is a quantitative content analysis of crime coverage to examine how serious crimes are portrayed by a newspaper. Specifically, what differences are there between actual crime incidents and newspaper coverage? And what differences are there those that reported contents of three types of crime? Previous content analyses of crime coverage were based on small samples for relatively short periods of time. In keeping with this approach, this study seeks to analyze a large sample of newspaper articles, covering several years. The analysis consisted of 2,058 serious crime(murder, rape. robbery)-related articles published by three newspapers from 2004 to 2013. More specifically, this study was conducted to quantitative analysis by focusing on characteristics such as personal information of the offender and victim, the offender-victim relationship, accomplices, drinking, recidivism crime causes and motives, the outcomes of the cases(sentencing), the measures against crime.
