This study intended to analyze in-service and pre-service elementary school teachers’ awareness of science teaching and acquire the implication of effective science teaching. As a result of analyzing their self-images on science teaching through an image analysis tool on this theme, DASTT-C, both in-service and pre-service teachers drew the image of student-based teaching mostly. Analyzing their awareness of the important requirements of effective science teaching and competent science teachers yielded the following findings: As for the effective science teaching method, both groups regarded student-based inquiry as the most important. That is, it was found that most teachers prefer such activities as experiment, observation, and experience, to simple explanation of theories or concepts. As for the most important requirement of competent science teachers, they valued the knowledge of contents in the textbook; for the class atmosphere, they valued liberal environment;and for the personal characteristics of science teachers, they regarded the self-confidence in science teaching as the most important.
