급성 설사는 성인에서 흔히 보는 질환 중 하나이며 세균성인지 비세균성인지를 임상양상 및 검사 소견 등을 기준으로 감별하여야 한다. 심한 설사, 혈변, 발열, 복통이 동반되는 경우에는 검사를 하여야 하며 입원 대상이다. 감염성 설사에서 적절한 항생제 사용은 세균성 이질, 여행자 설사, C. difficile 연관성 설사, 캄필로박터의 치료에 도움이 된다. 세균성 감염이 추정되더라도 임상 양상이 심하지 않을 경우에는 외래에서 추적 관리할 수 있다. 평가가 이루어지는 동안환자의 탈수상태를 평가하고 수액 및 영양공급을 하여 탈수의 교정과 진행을 예방하여야 한다.
