모든 ARDS 환자의 치료에 효과적인 약물은 아직 밝혀지지 않았으나 병인 및 병태생리에 기초한 새로운 약제의 개발은 계속되어야 한다. 다양한 환자 군이 모두 포함된 ARDS 전체에서는 치료 효과가 불확실하여도, 특정 환자 군에서 효과가 있는지 찾는 노력을 하여야 한다. 여러 약제를 같이 병합하여 투여하는 연구도 필요하다.
수액제 투여 지침의 개발은 최근에 이룬 성과 중에서도 매우 유용하고 의미가 있다. 임상적으로 적용하기도 쉬우므로 환자의 치료에 적극 활용하여야 한다.
